One column changes the physics, not just the parts count
American home garages get their projects finished through the end of summer, and the equipment doing it has to fit a building never designed for it. A single post lift puts a vehicle in the air from one side, and that arrangement asks something of the floor that a two post lift never does.
A two post lift shares the load between columns standing on either side of the car. The forces largely cancel, each column is loaded close to straight down, and the anchors are mostly holding the columns upright rather than stopping them from being torn out.
That is why a two post installation is mostly a question of getting the columns plumb and the anchors tight. The floor is carrying weight it was already carrying, redistributed onto four small areas rather than four tire contact patches.
Everything hangs outside the column, and that is the whole problem
On a single column the vehicle sits entirely to one side. Its weight acts at a distance from the post, and that distance multiplied by the weight is an overturning moment trying to rotate the whole machine about the edge of its base.
Nothing cancels it. The moment is resisted only by the base plate pressing down on one edge and lifting on the other, which means the floor is carrying a concentrated downward force at the front and a pull upward at the back.
The base plate is the part doing the structural work
Everything above the plate is a column and a set of arms. The plate spreads a concentrated moment across as much concrete as it can reach, and its size and stiffness decide whether the anchors see a manageable load or an impossible one.
How much concrete does a car lift need is a real question here
Manufacturers state a minimum slab thickness and concrete strength, and for lifting equipment those figures are typically a slab of several inches at a stated compressive strength. They are not conservative padding, and a floor that falls short does not fail gradually.
Residential slabs are frequently thinner than a shop floor and are often poured over fill of unknown quality. Age is no guide either, since a slab that has carried parked cars for thirty years has never been asked to resist an upward pull at four small points.
Testing is available and rarely done. A concrete core taken by a testing company reports both thickness and strength, and on a garage of unknown history it is the only way to replace an assumption with a number.
Anchors are working in tension, which is the hard direction for concrete
Concrete is enormously strong in compression and weak in tension, and an anchor being pulled out is loading it the weak way. The failure mode is a cone of concrete lifting out around the bolt, which is why edge distance and spacing matter as much as the bolt itself.
Cracked concrete changes the calculation entirely. An anchor set near an existing crack has a fraction of its rated capacity, because the cone of material it depends on is already separated from the slab around it.
Portable means the verification happens again every time
A portable single post lift can be rolled aside when the bay is needed for something else, which is the entire reason to own one. It also means the slab under the new position has never been assessed, and the checks done at installation apply to a spot the machine is no longer standing on.
Expansion joints and slab edges are the specific hazard. A base plate straddling a joint is sitting on two independent slabs that can move relative to each other, and an anchor set close to a slab edge has far less concrete to hold it.
Reinforcement is what nobody can see
Slabs with reinforcing mesh or fiber behave far better under a concentrated pull than plain concrete does. Whether any is present is usually unknown in a residential garage, which is another reason the manufacturer’s minimum is written as a floor rather than a target.
Where the car sits on the arms decides the moment
Lifting points are set by the vehicle manufacturer and they are not negotiable, but how far the vehicle sits from the column is partly the operator’s choice. Reaching further out to clear a wheel or a sill increases the lever arm and the load on the base.
Modern unibody vehicles have specific reinforced points and very little tolerance either side of them. Lifting on a sill outside those points bends the pinch weld at best, and on a single post arrangement it also shifts the load center outward.
Six thousand pounds is a rating with conditions attached
A 6000 pound single post lift is rated for a load positioned and balanced as the manufacturer intends. A vehicle placed unevenly front to back puts more than half the weight on one pair of arms, and the number on the label assumed that would not happen.
The floor has to be level as well as strong
A column that is out of plumb leans the load further out with every inch of lift. Shimming the base to true vertical is part of installation rather than a refinement, and it is checked with a level on the column itself rather than by eye.

Weighed against a two post lift, one column costs floor specification and returns completely open access down one side of the car. A restorer in Ohio had his slab core tested before buying, which is the step almost nobody takes and the only one that actually answers the question.
Home shops are buying equipment that used to be commercial
Rising labor rates have pushed serious lifting equipment into private garages, and with it a set of structural requirements that homeowners have no background in, which is why installation instructions now spend more space on concrete than on the single post lift.
